From 1942-1946, what is now Farragut State Park was the Farragut Naval Training Station, the 2nd largest U.S. Navy training station. Six of the training camps were named for Medal of Honor recipients. (Two future recipients trained at Farragut-Robert Eugene Bush and Frederick F. Lester)
These plaques commemorate the recipients and the camps named for them.
Oscar V. Peterson
At the time the camp was named, Peterson was believed to have been from Richfield, Idaho. He was not, however his widow moved there after his heroic action and death. There is now an IMO in his honor next to her grave in the Richfield cemetery.
Howard W. Gilmore is the other recipient a camp was named for but a photo is not currently available.
From 1942-1945 what is now the Minidoka National Historic Site was the Minidoka Relocaton Center, a Japanese American relocation camp. William K. Nakamura entered the service from here.
This plaque commemorates him and the other 72 men who entered the service from there and made the ultimate sacrifice.
William’s name is in the 2nd column from the right, 3rd name down.
